INTERVIEW: Luke Macfarlane Reflects on KILLJOYS Season 2

09/09/2016

It’s hard to believe it has been a week since Killjoys season two epic finale!

KILLJOYS -- Season:1 -- Pictured: Luke Macfarlane as D'Avin -- (Photo by: Steve Wilkie/Syfy)I recently had the privilege to speak with Luke Macfarlane. Luke portrays D’avin Jaqobis, the third member of one of the best bounty hunting team in the Quad.

Luke was very proud of the series and most especially the season finale. “It’s our biggest episode by far. It has the biggest set pieces and the most exciting action and the biggest reveal,” says Luke.

Luke describes the series as “a family drama disguised as sci-fi.” The bounty hunting triad is comprised of Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) and brothers John Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore) and D’avin. The team each shares their own dark past and together have created family. And, just like any family they have their ups and downs. “[Dutch] surrounds herself with these two guys who are able to go through the spectrum. We see Johnny go from caretaker, to lover, to reckless abandon guy. We see D’avin do the opposite as well.  [Dutch] needs them to be those sort of polarities in her life. I think as much as we have changed is all necessary for Dutch to navigate the world with these two guys.”

kill207_goodavinKilljoys season two was filled with incredible, fantastic and sometimes completely, delightfully, demented scenes. In episode 2.08, Luke’s character, D’avin, made the top spot on our list of wonderfully weird moments when he accidentally exploded the eyeballs of his enemy. “They couldn’t get the blast right. First one was way too much. They did it so many times. It was green, vanilla pudding,” Luke jokingly recalling his memories of that experience.

killjoys_gallery_201recap_18Another very memorable scene occurred in 2.05, when D’avin traded bodies with Khlyen (Rob Stewart), via his newfound Level Six skills. “I remember when I got the script, I felt really sorry for Rob because it would be easier to imitate Khlyen than it would be to imitate me. When he did, it was like, ‘Holy smokes! Amazing!’” Luke recalls.

Need more Killjoys? We’ve got you covered! Check out our earlier cast interviews with Hannah John-Kamen, Aaron Ashmore ,  Luke Macfarlene and Tamsen McDonough.

Fan Expo 2016: We Saw The Killjoys Finale At But We’re Only Going To Tell You About The Q&A

02/09/2016

Killjoys

Fan Expo Canada

Killjoys cast members Aaron Ashmore, Sarah Power, Tamsen McDonough, Thom Allison, Morgan Kelly, Rob Stewart, and showrunner Michelle Lovretta left The Quad behind to make an appearance at Fan Expo in Toronto last night for a special advance screening of the season two finale followed by a Q&A in front of a tonne of fans. While we don’t want to ruin the episode for you, we definitely want to fill you in on everything that went down during the super entertaining panel that came after it.

Just yesterday we found out that Killjoys would be back for a third season—proof that the series has built up a loyal fanbase—and the news turned the event into a bit of a celebration, prompting the cast to share what they loved best about the season and the Killjoys world that Lovretta and her team have built. Here are some of the highlights:

Thom Allison on what he likes best about playing Pree

PREE

For Allison it’s a tossup between Pree’s wardrobe and makeup, his surprising past as a intergalactic warlord, and the fact that almost every time his character opens his mouth, a snappy one-liner comes out. He’s also is a big fan of the way Lovretta has designed The Quad: “The thing I love most about the world is the lack of judgement,” Allison says. “Moral judgement doesn’t exist as it does in our world. It’s open in many ways. It’s person to person, and that makes everything so possible in the world.”

Sarah Power (Pawter) on the power dynamics in The Quad

PAWTER

“I like that all the women are the bosses,” says Power, adding that she really admired the way Lovretta, who turned Pawter into a symbol of the revolution in Old Town, handled her character’s death in episode nine. “I couldn’t wait to see what happened in [episode] 10—the fallout from that,” added Power. Um, same.

Tamsen McDonough on what it was like to get to be Lucy in fembot form

KISS

“It was exactly as you’d imagine—getting to meet everybody, and getting to see Lucy, the ship, pushing every button I could find, the stunts. It was so much fun to be thrown into the whole world.”

Morgan Kelly (Alvis) on his love for capes, Mossipedes, and The Quad

ALVIS

Leave it to a cape-wearing monk to have love for the killer plasma bugs we met in episode three, but Kelly’s feelings about the Killjoys universe go way beyond space centipedes: “There’s a grittiness that I like. It’s a got a sense of humour but it’s also got texture and struggle. The people are the underdogs and it’s this oppressed [population]. They’re people that you love, but it’s a struggle.”

Aaron Ashmore (Johnny) on his favourite season two scene

DINNER

“My favourite scene was the dinner scene on Qresh,” says Ashmore, who had one more scene to add to the list… You’ll get to see it tonight during the finale. The last episode of Killjoys (until next season, of course) is on Space at 9e 6p.

Link: Killjoys’ Luke Macfarlane reflects on D’Avin’s growth this season

01/09/2016

Is there something on my face?

From Bridget Liszewski of The TV Junkies:
“D’avin has been able to be there for Dutch, not in the way Johnny is there for Dutch, but there’s this funny thing called love that makes us go off in on different courses. D’avin is definitely there for Dutch in the finale with her larger mission. She experiences something pretty intense and D’avin happens to be the first person to be there for her. Johnny is still there with us too, though, it’s not like he’s off solo.”
